The Rutgers University Alumni Federation created the Meritorious Service Award in 1974 to recognize alumni, faculty, and friends of Rutgers for their outstanding service to the university.

The federation is composed of representatives of the alumni associations of the various colleges and graduate and professional schools of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. The federation’s goal is to serve the university and to support the individual associations in their outreach to alumni.
