Hurricanes and the Mid Atlantic Cold Pool: How Our Regional Ocean Can Protect Coastal Communities

Hurricanes and the Mid Atlantic Cold Pool: How Our Regional Ocean Can Protect Coastal Communities

Share This:

The Cold Pool is a broad seasonal ocean feature that is well known for supporting ecosystems throughout the Mid Atlantic region. Over the last decade, research has shown that this subsurface ocean feature can move or mix ahead of hurricanes. In certain cases this leads to massive ocean cooling ahead of hurricanes and rapidly weakens them before they make landfall.

In this talk, we’ll explore a few past storms, discuss how the Cold Pool can make hurricane forecasting difficult, and investigate how the Cold Pool may be changed.
