Marine Extension Program Seminar Series (MEPSS): Status and Future of New Jersey Tidal Marshes in the Face of Sea Level Rise
Featured Speaker, Judith Weis, Ph.D., Professor Emerita, Rutgers University – Newark will summarize research that analyzed four major marsh systems (Hackensack Meadowlands, Raritan Bay, Barnegat Bay, and Delaware Bay) that had been studied for horizontal changes (changes in
marsh extent) and vertical changes (elevation changes). The majority of NJ marshes are not keeping pace with the rate of sea level rise. Four potential remedies will be discussed: marsh migration pathways, rethinking Phragmites management, sediment manipulation, and living shorelines. This work was recently spotlighted in many news outlets, including Rutgers Today. Monday, November 29, 2021, 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM Free Zoom webinar open to all who are interested!
