Positive Feedback Bias: How White Instructors Harm Learners of Color
Providing instructional feedback requires a delicate balance of informational, motivational, and interpersonal concerns. White instructors’ interracial anxieties can disrupt this balance, causing them to provide students of color with positively biased feedback. As a result, students of color receive more praise and less criticism than feedback given to white learners for work of equal merit. Kent Harber, Professor of Psychology at Rutgers–Newark, has studied the positive feedback bias for more than 20 years. In this webinar, he will discuss the nature, causes, and potential costs of the bias and some ways in which it can be remedied.
