Join us for a conversation about race and policing in Chicago featuring Bill McCarthy, dean of Rutgers–Newark’s School of Criminal Justice. McCarthy will talk about his forthcoming book, Chicago’s Reckoning: Racism, Politics, and the Deep History of Policing in an American City (with John Hagan and Daniel Herda; Oxford University Press, 2021). In the book, McCarthy and his colleagues examine the Chicago Police torture scandal of the 1970s to 1990s and its connection to racial segregation, local politics, and policing, both historically and today. McCarthy is the co-author of the award-winning book Mean Streets: Youth Crime and Homelessness (Cambridge University Press, 1998) and has conducted research on adolescent romantic relationships and delinquency. The author of more than 50 journal articles and chapters, he studies racial discrimination and crime, illegal income, sex work, and homicide.

His talk will be moderated by Jesenia Pizarro NCAS’00, SCJ’02, GSN’05, associate professor, School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, Arizona State University.
